The Xhariep District Municipality, alongside Mohokare Local Municipality, the Department of Health, the Free State Premier's Office, local SAPS, SALGA, and the Department of Social Development, marked World AIDS Day by delivering an encouraging and unifying message to the residents of Zastron at Mooifontein Primary School.
This joint event aimed to show solidarity with those affected by HIV and AIDS, embracing the theme "Overcoming Disruptions, Transforming the AIDS Response" for this year.
Xhariep District Mayor Irene Mehlomakhulu urged the community to come together and support each other in the fight against HIV.
"This day reminds us of our shared responsibility to support one another, break the silence, and strengthen our collective commitment to a healthier, more resilient community. We recognise the challenges that continue to disrupt progress—but we also acknowledge the power of collaboration, compassion, and innovation. Together, we can rebuild momentum, expand access to quality health services, and ensure that no one is left behind," said Mehlomakhulu.
Various representatives from the participating institutions also shared supportive messages with the residents.
AIDS activist and local clinic worker Jerry Nkomo offered words of encouragement, emphasising that living with HIV is not a death sentence.
"Our main problem is the stigma surrounding HIV in our communities, but once you find out that you are positive, start by accepting yourself, and be informed about the virus as well. You will then realise that it is not a death sentence. We need to support those living with HIV, showing them that they are still welcomed despite their status," said Nkomo.
The commemoration also launched the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, following President Ramaphosa's declaration of GBV as a national crisis.
Residents of Matlakeng were advised to remain cautious and safe during the festive season.
