The Boitumelong Special School in Thaba Nchu, Free State, was heavily impacted by a gale storm that occurred on Sunday, the 23rd.

This school, which serves 384 learners with severe intellectual disabilities, including 44 autistic learners, experienced extensive damage.

Eight classrooms were affected, with roofs torn off and corrugated iron scattered throughout the premises and nearby areas.

A teacher was injured when the ceiling collapsed, and autistic learners had meltdowns due to the distressing event.

Fortunately, no learners were physically harmed.

The Free State Department of Education is seeking help to restore the school, and psychosocial support will be provided for those suffering from post-traumatic shock.

Students will remain at home for reorganisation purposes.

Efforts are underway to mobilise infrastructure support to prevent further damage from ongoing rainfall.

The school is open to assistance from contractors, corporations, citizens, and stakeholders to aid in its restoration.

Those willing to help can contact Principal NE Nthuping at 0832 643 081.
