UFS QWAQWA CAMPUS OFFERS ROBOTICS AND STEM OPPORTUNITIES TO LOCAL CHILDREN

The Qwaqwa Campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) has initiated a community engagement project to introduce Phuthaditjhaba school children to robotics, coding, and other STEM fields, aiming to expand their technological exposure and career prospects.
A ceremony was held on Thursday, 27 August, to award certificates to participants of the Charlie “The Crazy Shopper” Robotics initiative, which links local schools with the university's resources and expertise.
Adebola Musa, a lecturer at the Qwaqwa Campus, stated that the initiative was created to challenge the notion that STEM is inaccessible in rural areas.
Launched in 2023 by Dr Andronicus Akinyelu, the program focuses on supporting disadvantaged schools and communities.
In 2026, the program introduced Charlie, a robot crafted by the participating children.
Moodi Matsoso, the Community Engagement Coordinator, emphasised the program's role in offering practical and engaging STEM experiences, strengthening ties between the university and local schools.
The initiative has yielded positive outcomes, with teachers like Teboho Moloi from Mohaladitwe Secondary School reporting improved student performance in STEM subjects.
Daniel Moloi from the Agape Foundation highlighted the program's importance in equipping communities with new technology skills, enhancing their competitiveness.
He pointed out the broader social impact, offering positive opportunities for youth in areas challenged by crime.
The program also familiarises children with university life, promoting higher education and careers in technology.
Through partnerships, the UFS Qwaqwa Campus continues to engage with the community, connecting schools with university expertise and creating opportunities for young people to explore STEM fields and consider future career paths.
