Vuyani Gibson Mpasie 27, a fake bursaries donor, masquerading as a Mangaung Metro official, appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court today (Mon) for formal bail hearing, for alleged corruption and extortion.

The case against him was postponed to Monday, 16 February 2026 for a formal bail application after making his first appearance on Thursday last week.

He is expected to reappear soon in court.

On 5 February 2026, Serious Corruption Investigation detectives of the Hawks in Bloemfontein received information about a man who was introducing himself as an official of Mangaung Metro and promising to facilitate the approval of bursary applications at a fee. This information was operationalised culminating in the suspect's arrest on 11 February 2026.

Free State Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, appeals to anyone who might have fallen victim to the scam to call Hawks detectives on 082 584 4043. "Government bursaries are not for sale," warns Major General Mokgadi.
