FREE STATE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT ACKNOWLEDGES THAT JUNE 30TH WILL CONTINUE TO BE A REGULAR DAY

The Free State Provincial Government wishes to inform the people of the Free State about the upcoming nationwide march on 30th June 2026.

Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae has stated that the Provincial Government approaches this time with determination and clarity, saying, "We are committed to intensifying our efforts, especially in creating safer, more united communities."

In line with this commitment, the Provincial Government would like to emphasise that 30 June 2026 will be a regular working day.

All government services, including schools, healthcare facilities, municipal offices, and other essential services, will function as usual.

Residents are encouraged to continue their daily activities without fear or concern.

The Free State Provincial Government acknowledges and respects the constitutional right of all citizens to participate in lawful, peaceful protests.

However, we are equally committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, protecting property, and safeguarding the rights of everyone, including students, healthcare users, workers, and business owners.

As the South African Police Service has indicated, the right to protest comes with the responsibility to act within the law.

The government has noted with concern the unfortunate incidents of violence, looting, and intimidation during recent protests in parts of the province.

We strongly condemn these actions.

Criminal elements will not be allowed to take over legitimate protest actions.

Law enforcement agencies have been deployed and are on high alert to maintain public order, protect lives and property, and bring any perpetrators of violence to justice.

The Provincial Government is aware of growing concerns among residents, business owners, and foreign nationals due to reports of anti-immigration rhetoric and isolated xenophobic attacks in parts of the province.

Let us be clear: the Free State Provincial Government condemns xenophobia in all its forms.

All people living in the province, irrespective of nationality, are entitled to legal protection.

The government has also acknowledged the legitimate frustrations of many South Africans regarding illegal immigration and its impact on public services and employment opportunities.

These are national policy issues that require lawful and orderly solutions.

Vigilantism and violence are not solutions.

The government urges all residents to allow the appropriate authorities to address immigration issues through established legal procedures and engagement channels.

To provide clarity and dispel unfounded fears, the Provincial Government offers the following direct responses to concerns circulating within our communities:

• Will schools be closed? – We have communicated with all principals to ensure normal administrative operations continue, even though learners are currently on recess. The academic program remains unaffected.

• Will hospitals be shut? – Healthcare facilities remain fully operational with all staff on duty. Citizens needing medical attention will receive services without interruption.

• Will it be unsafe to go to work? – Law enforcement is deployed across the province to ensure public safety. We advise monitoring official government channels for verified updates and exercising standard personal safety precautions.

• Will foreign nationals be targeted? – The government condemns xenophobia. All people are entitled to protection. Any incidents of intimidation or violence against foreign nationals must be reported immediately to the nearest police station.

• Will businesses be looted? – The South African Police Service is on high alert and will take decisive action against any attempts at looting. Business owners are advised to take standard security precautions.

• Is the government not listening? – We have established engagement channels through the Office of the Premier, municipal offices, and the relevant government departments. We remain committed to addressing legitimate grievances through constructive dialogue.

The Provincial Government remains committed to addressing the legitimate concerns of our communities through appropriate channels.

Residents are urged to voice their grievances through the Office of the Premier, municipal offices, and relevant government departments rather than resorting to actions that disrupt the lives of fellow citizens.
