Residents of Kanana and Dinotsing in Zastron have expressed serious concerns about the persistent problem of malfunctioning streetlights in their neighbourhoods.

They have highlighted that the resulting darkness from these nonfunctioning lights is leading to a worrying rise in crime rates in the area.

Many community members believe that the inadequate lighting is fostering an environment where criminal activities can flourish, making it increasingly unsafe for residents, especially at night.

Elderly individuals living alone in these communities are particularly anxious and express a deep fear for their safety at night.

The lack of streetlights has left them feeling vulnerable and exposed as they move through their neighbourhoods in darkness.

This increased sense of insecurity is justified, as the lack of visibility has made it easier for criminals to target unsuspecting victims.

Community members have reported that areas around the community hall and local stadium have become hotspots for criminal activity, with offenders exploiting the darkness to commit crimes.

Those attempting to walk home after dark are becoming increasingly frequent victims of theft and other offences, as criminals lie in wait, hidden from view near these poorly lit areas.

Ward 7 councillor Thabiso Nai has acknowledged the concerns raised by the residents and confirmed that he has reported the issue to the relevant authorities.

However, he has been informed that the municipality currently lacks a cherry picker truck, which is necessary to maintain high-mast lights.

This lack of equipment has left the community in a state of uncertainty, as it remains unclear when or if the problem will be resolved.

Meanwhile, frustration and fear continue to grow among the affected residents, who are left to deal with the consequences of inadequate street lighting.

The situation has sparked discussions within the community about the urgent need for action and accountability from local government officials to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
