Two academics from the University of the Free State (UFS), Prof Serges Kamga and Prof Carlien Pohl-Albertyn, have been elected to the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), acknowledging their significant contributions to research and scholarship.
Dr Mutshidzi Mulondo was also selected for the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), recognised for his work in public mental health.
Prof Kamga, Dean of the Faculty of Law, focuses on human rights and social justice, aiming to remove barriers to human development. Prof Pohl-Albertyn, a Professor of Microbiology, researches bioactive lipids in fungi to find new antifungal therapies and emphasises mentorship in her work.
Dr Mulondo's research aims to advance digital strategies for mental health, particularly in lower- and middle-income countries.
Prof Vasu Reddy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UFS, highlights the importance of ASSAf and SAYAS as platforms for scholarly excellence and societal impact.
ASSAf, founded by Nelson Mandela in 1996, promotes scientific excellence and international collaboration.
SAYAS empowers young scientists to influence science and policy in South Africa.
The election of these scholars reflects UFS's growing research impact and commitment to excellence across various disciplines.
Through their work, UFS continues to shape South Africa's scientific and academic landscape, fostering an inclusive and forward-looking research community.
