The Xhariep District Municipality, in collaboration with SEDFA, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Small Business Development sector, successfully organised a significant workshop and awareness roadshow focused on the Spaza Shop Fund and the critical issue of foot-and-mouth disease.

This informative event took place at the Zastron Town Hall on Wednesday, the 11th, drawing a substantial crowd from the local community.

The primary objective of this workshop was to provide vital assistance and comprehensive guidance to Spaza shop owners regarding the forthcoming Spaza Shop Fund.

This fund is designed to support small businesses, particularly those operating in under-resourced areas, by facilitating access to financial resources that can help them thrive.

During the event, participants were presented with detailed information about the application process for the fund, which included an explanation of the eligibility criteria, the types of support available, and the anticipated timelines for disbursement.

The workshop provided a platform for attendees to engage directly with experts who could clarify any uncertainties about the funding process and assist them in preparing their applications effectively.

In addition to the focus on Spaza shops, the event also prioritised educating local farmers about foot-and-mouth disease, which has recently been declared a national disaster due to its significant impact on livestock health and the agricultural industry as a whole.

This crucial information aimed to empower farmers with the knowledge necessary to protect their livestock and mitigate the risks associated with outbreaks.

This interaction was essential in ensuring that all participants left with a clear understanding of how to navigate the application process and maximize their chances of securing funding.

Furthermore, farmers received critical information about the foot-and-mouth disease vaccination process.

It was emphasized that the vaccine would be provided free of charge to those who needed it, reinforcing the commitment to support local farmers in safeguarding their livestock.

The discussions included details on how to access the vaccine, the importance of timely vaccination, and the role of farmers in reporting any suspected cases of the disease.

This proactive approach not only aims to protect individual farms but also seeks to prevent the spread of the disease throughout the region, ultimately supporting the health of the entire agricultural community.
